As I was "considering" Jn 1:12 in respect to this subject, I glanced through each of the posts and did not come across this verse.  "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God."   It doesn't say we can become Christians without receiving him.  If we can't become children of God, Christians, without receiving him, how can we receive forgiveness without receiving it?   How would one receive forgiveness but by acknowledging that they had made an offense, and as we once use to be told, "Say you're sorry."  But just saying you were sorry was not always sufficient.   Restitution had to be made.    The complaint would be made by a sibling against another sibling for example "Johnny took my toy!"   Parent would not just respond "Johnny say you are sorry.", but "Johnny say you are sorry and give them back their toy."  So it is not just enough to admit sin (which can wrongfully be done pridefully) but to ask for forgiveness.  We don't just say "I burped."   We say (or at least should say) "Pardon me."  Which is the same thing as saying "Forgive me."

As I do my daily reading of "Reading Through the Bible in a Year" ... I just keep coming across verses that call for people to approach the Lord first before being forgiven by Him.  1Ks 8 is full of this.   See vv. 30,33,34,38,39,46-50.

2Ks 24:4 Speaks of evil King Manassah when it says "for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood; which the LORD would not pardon."   It is not until 2Ch 33:12,13 that Manassah in affliction humbles himself before the LORD, and the LORD delivers him out of Assyrian captivity back to being king again in Jerusalem.

And what is to be said of the verses that mention forgiveness without the forgiveness requested?  This is the first I've ever heard of this reason to be unforgiving. I didn't know there was such a thing. When someone offends me I assume they sinned as well and I leave God to deal with that while I forgive and move on. He will either have His vengeance or show mercy if they confess their sin to God. I submit these offenses to God.   Hadn't seen action on this site but knew it couldn't hurt.

Been away for awhile. No answers to posts suggests no one looking. I'll check in the future as I would not assume the stewardship of the site to be neglected deliberately. Then again what would I know.
